October 2016 showed a spike in the job market for Lee and Collier counties in Southwest Florida. Primarily comprised of Naples, Marco Island, and Ft. Myers, businesses added more than 12,000 jobs over last year. "Southwest Florida continues to be a great area for job creation in the state... Our focus on cutting taxes and reducing regulations, (along with the President's policies for job creation), provide new opportunities for our state's families," he said in a news release.

The Naples area added 4,200 jobs, led by the construction industry with over 1,200 new jobs. The next top industry was leisure and hospitality with over 900 new positions filled. Collier County's unemployment rate fell to 5.2 percent, down from 5.4 percent in September. Under President Obama, the national unemployment rate has fallen under 5 percent, from a high of nearly 10 percent.

The state gained 253,300 jobs over the year, a 3.1 percent growth rate. This is higher than the nation job growth rate of 1.7 percent. It appears that Florida will continue on a job-creation path, at least for the near future.
