Arches National Park, Utah
On August 25th, the National Park Service will be celebrating 100 years. They will be offering free admission to 127 parks. Among those are the Everglades, Yellowtone, Crater Lake, Denali National Park, and Joshua Tree National Park in California.
Created by Congress on August 25, 1916, and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson, the National Park Service employs over 20,000 and oversees over 400 units, of which 59 are designated national parks. Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the United States in 1872, signed by then president Ulysses S. Grant. The units or areas cover more than 84 million acres. These include not only national parks, but monuments, battlefields, military parks, historical parks, historic sites, lakeshores, recreation areas, scenic rivers, trails, and the White House. No other country in the world processes the diversity that our National Parks and other National Park Service areas offer. Over 300 million people visit our national parks yearly. The most popular is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park with over 10 million visitors, doubling the number two most visited park, Grand Canyon National Park.
